Doctor Henry Jekyll (also known as Dr. Jekyll) is a character on Jekyll and Hyde played by David Bark-Jones. Henry Jekyll was a well respected English scientist in the 1800s. He was described as a fine upstanding pillar of the community. The father of Louis Hyde, and the grandfather of Robert and Olalla Jekyll. He appears to be the first to carry the burden of the 'curse' in the Jekyll family. His 'transformed' alter-ego is Mr. Edward Hyde.

Profile[]

Henry Jekyll was a good man and a well respected doctor and scientist. Although, he had some strange beliefs about life. Mainly about how everyone has two natures-- a good side and a bad side, constantly at war with each other. Dr. Jekyll had a theory about his beliefs that said, "Man is not truly one, but truly two".

One day when Dr. Jekyll entered his laboratory, his assistant Garson shows him the new package from his patron Sir Danvers Carew, containing three vials of oil of Monocane. Henry said that the Monocane was all they needed to complete the new formula he was working on. He was experimenting on himself, with the intention of splitting himself in two. Once Dr. Jekyll added the Monocane to the chemicals in the chemistry set, it produced a red potion into a triangle vial. Henry took the potion and poured a small amount of it into a glass cup, with the purpose of drinking it. Once he drank the potion, he suddenly went into a metamorphosis, and was changed into the dark side of his own nature. A monster named, Edward Hyde was born.

At some point in his life, Henry wrote a letter to his lawyer and best friend Gabriel Utterson, saying some slightly excitable stuff about what he called "our curse".

In October 1885, Henry visited Gabriel Utterson, and asked him to change his will, by leaving everything to Edward Hyde. But Gabriel was against it. He denounced the idea as madness, saying that Hyde had a reputation for violence and debauchery. But Henry was insistent on his decision.

After Mr. Hyde murdered Sir Danvers Carew, Dr. Jekyll promptly committed suicide by poisoning himself. Leaving no legitimate heir to pass his money and estate on to. But he left behind an illegitimate son named Louis, who was the result of an affair between Henry (as Edward Hyde) and the singer Maggie Kendall. But to avoid scandal, the boy was sent away and brought up in secret under a different name - 'Hyde'.

Henry's grandson Robert has followed in his footsteps in becoming a doctor.
